CONTEMPORARY GARDEN WITH COMPOSITE DECKS

This is a large garden for a newly built house in Bothwell.

I was asked to come up with the design for this garden before the house had been constructed. I had seen the plans and had a great feel for how the client wanted the garden to be. After seeing the house rise from the ground and watching each step of progress it was a great process to be involved with realising their dreams for the garden; a contemporary space for all the family including an area for the dogs.

After working in the rain and mud for much of the time the garden began to take shape. Two black composite decks lead out from the kitchen and dining room. One has a steel and Perspex balustrade around it and the other has Buxus sempervirens planted all around it to form a neat rectangular hedge.

Three white rendered cubes hold some topiary pyramid Buxus sempervirens surrounded by Lavandula angustifolia. Three Carpinus Betula stand guard behind the cubes and frame the cubes.

A further patio in dark jade Slate edged with black cobbles takes pride of place in the bottom right corner to capture the evening sun. Behind the patio are white rendered walls and three Betula utilis var jacquemontii (White Himalayan birch) which stand out in the depth of winter or when lit up at night.
