Hospital Garden
This was my first project when I was a student.
The Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow wanted a disused gravel strip between two departments to be made into a garden which could be used by the patients and staff. The area was long and narrow and overshadowed by the buildings on either side.
In addition there would be nowhere in the hospital to store any materials and a restricted budget.
Work had to be carried out at weekends and all materials had to be kept on site during construction.
Together with some members of staff and friends from college, I set about transforming this narrow strip into the 'Green Space Garden'.
Now it is flourishing and has been a welcome addition to the hospital, used by children to relax between treatments and staff during breaks.
The plants chosen were chosen specifically with a sensory theme: rustling bamboo which is lit up at night, the fragrant Pineapple Broom, the trickling of water in the pebble fountain and lots of flowers throughout the year.
The garden continues to grow, nurtured by one of the doctors in the MRI Unit and will provide distraction and relaxation between treatments.
